Basic Guide for the New Runescape Player

This guide only covers people who are starting as meeleers, but I suppose rangers and mages could use it too. They’d just have to find thier equipment somewhere other than the Lumbridge General Store. Now, for all you meleers out there, sorry to tell you that this guide isn’t entirely comprehensive. It’ll only cover some basic moneymaking, combat experience, woodcutting, and cooking. However, it should be enough to get your first few sets of armor and weapons, as well as anything else you might need in the immediate future.

Getting down to business, here’s what to do: Starting from the gate of Lumbridge Castle (you should be facing west), turn North and walk until you pass the musician. Directly east of you should be a building marked by a symbol of an empty pot on your minimap. Walk inside and talk to the man behind the counter. Ask to see his wares to claim your free bronze dagger, hatchet, and tinderbox, then leave the store. Face west again, and you should see a bridge over the River Lum. Hop on across, but DON’T go through the gate that’s on the other side. Instead, go north. Very soon you should see a fenced-in enclosure. Go inside.

Look around you. You see a bunch of cows and (most likely) several other players, right? Well, you should. Check to see that your dagger is equipped. Once that’s done, click on a cow to attack it. You’ll probably take a bit of damage, but eventually it should keel over. There’s going to be a pile of items where the cow was standing. Pick them all up and open up your inventory (if you didn’t have it open already, that is). There should be a Bones, a Raw Beef, and a Cowhide. Click the Bones once to bury them. This is rather important because you’ll be generating Prayer experience as you do. Now, leave the enclosure and click on a tree to chop it down. Several things about this-don’t click on an oak, because if you’re just starting, you won’t be able to chop those down yet. Also, clicking on a Dead Tree works just as well. Cutting down the tree may take a little while, but be patient. When you have the logs, click them once to selsct them, then click the tinderbox to light them. Again, be patient, it may take a while. Once you’ve got yourself a roaring fire, select the Raw Beef and click the fire to cook it. Hopefully, the meat won’t burn and you’ll have yourself some Cooked Meat to eat in case your HP gets low. As for the cowhide, keep it in your inventory for safekeeping. If you’re low on HP and you’ve run out of beef, put on your best “scared little girl” face and book it out of there. Leave the enclosure as fast as you can and relax outside while your HP restores itself.

Once your inventory is entirely full of cowhides, leave the enclosure and take the path directly outside. Follow it north until you reach a fork in the road near some sheep. Head west and continue along the path, and soon you should enter a city. Welcome to Varrock! Keep heading north until you come to a fountain, at which point you should go west to the bank. Cut through the bank, and on the other side, you ought to see a statue of a giant hand holding giant money. Go towards it and through the gate it’s next to. This is the Grand Exchange, where you can sell your items and buy other people’s things. Keep on heading north until you see a mass of people. Go to the desk and talk to the woman in blue. Access the Grand Exchange and sell all your Cowhides for the Grand Exchange price (don’t worry, it’s the default). You should get them sold almost instantly, and congratulations! You now have 5,000-7,000gp! Use this to buy your first armor set, as well as a Bronze Scimitar (iron, if you have level 5 attack). Do this as many times as you wish to get some cash and level up at the same time. It’s much speedier than many of the other things you could do to level up, and it’s very effective, especially for new players. Good luck!
