Everything is relative. Even fishing…
Everything is relative. Nothing is fixed. Things that seem certain today may disappear tomorrow. We are changing and our perception of reality changes with us.
Oops, too many smart statements. Right.., to the point!
Well, here I am – level 45 warrior in full adamant with rune long, fishing lobsters in Catherby. Amulet of defense is around my neck, stripy wildy cape is flowing behind, sapphire ring and bare foots. As I said, fishing lobsters. Got the picture?
Fishing is slow, but levels go fast. Soon I will be level 45 fishing, not just combat. Almost 200 lobsters are in my bank and I already counted how much money I would get for them. 50K! I was going to Edgeville in some of the busy worlds with a lot of pkillers. Food is always needed and they would pay good price for sure!
Now, here HE comes. Level 103, dragon chain, legs, shield, sword – all deeply red, including the name. Wow! Truly impressive (keep in mind it all happened a few years ago). And he shouts: “Buying 1000 cooked lobs 200ea”.
“You gotta be kidding me!!! High levels and still can’t make food for himself! What was he doing all the time, just killing stuff? Pitiful! He has to buy lobsters! No shame! Me, only level 45, but I am able to get myself decent food (thank you very much!).”
Somebody agreed to sell him lobsters and they ran away. I remained and vowed that I would never embarrass myself like this high level person just did.
A few months passed by, I was fishing swordies and lobsters, selling them in Edgeville and making 40-50K a day. Life was good. Adamant armor was replaced by rune, rune long by rune scimitar. I finally afforded amulet of power and even ring of wealth (110K I paid for it, no kidding!). I started to think about getting to sharks. That was a long term goal for sure. But I made a choice and got myself cooking gauntlets.
Few more months passed by, my combat went up to mid seventies and I found better ways to make money. So, I stopped selling lobsters, instead I ate them while doing other tasks. But I was still striving to the sharks.
Finally came a day, when I caught my first shark (using fishing potion)! What a happy moment it was! Several days, I was doing just that: catching sharks, cooking them and selling. 1K each. Serious money. The profit was so good, that I couldn’t make myself eat them. Instead I was catching some quick lobsters and used them during combat.
Another month passed, I was level 85 combat and was pushing slayer up. I needed tons of food and lobster fishing sessions became unpleasant time wasting chores. Money was not a real issue anymore (thanks to the sharks), so one day I came to Catherby, walked to the shore and shouted: “Buying 1000 cooked lobs 200ea”…
The circle was closed. Somewhere out there, a level 45 warrior in full adamant was fishing lobsters. I could see him frowning in disapproval. And, here I was holding a whip in my hand and asking for 1000 lobsters.
Has the world changed?
No. I simply learned more about it.

Aww that was beautiful! I love your articles ^_^ Yeah…I used to think to myself: “Omg! I’m making so much money selling lobsters! And here these…idiots!! are buying them for 200ea?? Lazy bums! I’m making money off of them! Hah!”
Next thing I knew I was at Varrock bank buying sharks for 1k ea o.o And I actually thought to myself…”Hah…can’t believe I used to try to do this on my own…now people are selling them to me and I don’t have to do any work! >D”

Great story, and I really see it happen, though I’ve taken a different route (20 to lvl 50, then hard training to 96 combat a few months later). Azuki has a point, you start out thinking “wow they’re buying these from me for so much!” and you end up thinking “i can’t beleive these newbies do all the work for me! ^_^”. You always tend to view a little money as alot when you’re new. I remember being lvl 20 and thinking that 10k was a whole LOt of money and that I was rich (it was given to me by a friend). Now, I’ve got 1.8m and I think i’m real low on cash… It’s like taht in real life, when you’re 2,a dollar is alot, when you’re 25, it’s very little (assuming you’ve lead a decently successful career).
Life’s funny, aint it?
