How To Earn Smithing Experience Fast!

Welcome to the second installment of my Smithing guide! This part of the guide will show you the best way to level up your Smithing. Like the last guide, we’ll go through all the different ways you can go about getting that 99 Smithing, and show you the best and worst ways of doing it. The fastest way to level your Smithing is to buy bars from players or the Grand Exchange and make the bars yourself. Please note that you will never make money doing this, but you may make a significant chunk of your input back. Depending on what items you forge with your bars, you should be able to make at least 50% of your expenses back. When Smithing, you should smith at the anvils just across the street from the west bank. It’s very quick and easy, and you should be able to minimize time and maximize experience.

Okay let’s just dive right into it then! The first part of the guide will show you which bars yield the most experience, and then we’ll look at money. For the purposes of this guide, I’m going to assume you’re smithing platebodies. They are the quickest to make and they will typically sell quickly. You probably won’t make much money selling them, but so that we can move forward with the guide, let’s use platebodies. We are, after all, trying to earn more experience; not money.

The following table lists the levels required to make platebodies:

Bronze - 18
Iron - 33
Steel - 48
Mithril - 68
Adamant - 88
Rune - 99
Black - 4.2 (this is a joke, by the way)

The following table will show how much experience is earned from Smithing each bar, followed by how much experience will be earned per platebody, and finally how much experience you will earn per inventory (separated by slashes):

Bronze - 12.5 / 62.5 / 312.5
Iron - 25 / 125 / 625
Steel - 37.5 / 187.5 / 937.5
Mithril - 50 / 250 / 1250
Adamant - 62.5 / 312.5 / 1562.5
Rune - 75 / 375 / 1875

Since each type of bar is forged at the same speed, you will earn the fastest experience with the best type of bars that you can smith. So if you can smith Runite, then you’ll earn the most experience per hour. It seems obvious to smith the best bars, but the problem is that each successive bar is exponentially more expensive than its predecessor. Prices are as follows, in the same format as the experience table:

Bronze - 371 / 1855 / 9275
Iron - 426 / 2130 / 10650
Steel - 1090 / 5450 / 27250
Mithril - 1615 / 8075 / 40375
Adamantite - 3033 / 15165 / 75825
Runite - 19.7k / 98.5k / 492.5k

runebar

Yeah you read and saw that right. It will cost nearly half a million gp to make JUST 5 RUNE PLATEBODIES. And at their current price of 68.1k, you’ll only be making 340.5k of that back, meaning a loss of ~150k per inventory. That’s kind of a lot. But the experience will certainly make up for the loss of money you take with each inventory. NOTE: If you are capable of smithing Rune Scimitars, you should do so. You will only lose about 2k per Scimitar, as they only require 2 bars to make, and sell for approximately 36.5k. If you think of anything else that will minimize loss, please let me know so I can include it in this guide.

I imagine the last thing you want to know is which type of bar will maximize experience earned. Well, let’s pretend again that you have 500k to spend. We’re going to drain every last penny you have here. Let’s go out and buy 500k of each type of bar (figuratively, of course). Here’s what you’ll have:

1347 Bronze Bars @ 499,737 gp
1173 Iron Bars @ 499,698 gp
458 Steel Bars @ 499,220 gp
309 Mithril Bars @ 499,035 gp
164 Adamantite Bars @ 497,412 gp
25 Runite Bars @ 492,500 gp

After smithing them all, you will have on your hands:

269 Bronze Plates, 2 remaining Bronze Bars, and 16,812.5 exp.
234 Iron Plates, 3 remaining Iron Bars, and 29,250 exp.
91 Steel Plates, 3 remaining Steel Bars, and 17,062.5 exp.
61 Mithril Plates, 4 remaining Mithril Bars, and 15,250 exp.
32 Adamant Plates, 4 remaining Adamantite Bars, and 10,000 exp.
5 Rune Plates, 0 remaining Runite Bars, and 1,875 exp.

Okay, let’s rule out Bronze, Adamantite, and Runite, and press onward with our remaining metals. It appears that Iron is the clear winner, but like I said, we’re going to get the most out of our money. Head over to the Grand Exchange and sell all of your creations. You should end up with some money. Put that back into the Grand Exchange and you’ll have more bars ready to be smithed. After selling your platebodies, and then buying more bars, you’ll end up with the following:

234 Iron Plates > 418 each > 97,812 gp > 229 Iron Bars (+3 left over)
91 Steel Plates > 1,374 each > 125,034 gp > 114 Steel Bars (+3 left over)
61 Mithril Plates > 2,979 each > 181,719 gp > 112 Mithril Bars (+4 left over)

If we run the numbers again we’ll end up with the following experience totals:

Iron - 35,000 exp
Steel - 21,375 exp
Mithril - 21,000 exp

Obviously you can continue the process until you smith like one platebody, but I think we have a pretty good idea of what to expect now. For the money, Iron is the clear winner (as long as you can sell the platebodies, but considering iron is the pure’s choice, it shouldn’t be too terribly difficult. If you are having trouble selling, just switch to something else or sell at the minimum price). You’ll have a lot of extra Iron bars though, so it will take a lot more time to make them all. You’ll be making far more trips to the anvil with iron than with mithril, but for 500k, it shouldn’t take even close to an hour of work. It’s up to you, but my suggestion is iron.

I hope this was helpful for many people (I would have never expected iron to yield the best experience), and hopefully this puts people one step closer on their quests for 99 smithing. Good luck and happy smithing!

if you were to make steel bars with a coal bag, you would get 37.5 exp per bar, 637.5 exp per inv, and make a profit.
