How to start Farming in 10 Steps

Some of the recent Runescape skills may seem quite complex to start. A lot of new items get involved as well as new shops, areas, monsters and techniques. People get one look at a multipage skill guide and go “Do I really need to read all this?!!”
Well, the answer is NO. At least not all at once. There are usually just a few things you really need to know in order to get into a new skill.

And this is exactly what this article about: 10 simple steps to start your Farming carrier.

Step 1. Get into Draynor.

Step 2. Buy or steal seeds.
If your Thieving level is below 27, you have to buy low level seeds (potato, onion, cabbage and marigold) from Olivia.
If your Thieving level is 27-45 you can safely steal low level seeds from the stalls.
If you Thieving level is more than 45, go for Master Farmer and clean up his pockets.
Either way, you get the seeds you need (and potentially a nice boost to your Thieving). Get 20-30 potato, onion and cabbage seeds, 10-25 marigold seeds. If you also get tomato, corn, limpwurt or herb seeds – great, put them into the bank, you’ll need them later.

Step 3. Decide how many Farming places you will use. I would recommend three places: Catherby, Falador and Ardougne. But it will depend on your priorities and ability to teleport.
Let’s take a look.

  • If you are NOT going to do power farming, you need just one place. In this case pick Catherby. It is the best one: bank and water are close, farming shop is right there; even a place to buy pineapples for supercompost is there. Plus there are always things to do around Catherby while you are waiting for your crops to grow.
  • If you ARE going to do power farming, you must be able to teleport to Falador, Camelot and, preferably, Ardougne. If you can’t teleport to Ardougne, do the Ghost Ahoy quest and use the Ghost City farming patch as a third location.

Step 4. Equip yourself. Take the seeds (potato, onion, cabbage and marigold), some money (500gp is enough), teleport runes and, in case you use the Ghost City farming patch, Ectophial.

Step 5. Go to the first patch and buy the tools in a farming shop (Rake, Spade, Watering Can and Seed Dibber). I would recommend starting from either Falador or Catherby. Both places have farming shops very close to the farming patches.
Note that there is a friendly Leprechaun wandering by every farming place. After you done with planting your seeds you may give farming tools to the Leprechaun, so they won’t take space in your bank.

Step 6. Buy seven buckets with compost. You’ll need three buckets to plant seeds and four buckets to pay a farmer for looking after your potato fields.
In general it is a good idea to pay farmers to look after your crops, but don’t get hanged up on it – if you don’t have a payment, plant anyway.

Step 7. Plant your seeds. Initially you will be planting potatoes and marigold. Later on – you’ll switch to onions, cabbages, tomatoes, higher flowers and so on. To plant seeds:

  • Clear a patch from weeds using Rake
  • Use a bucket with compost (or supercompost) on the cleared patch
  • Use desired seeds on the patch (you need to have a Seed Dipper and a Spade in your inventory)
  • Water the patch by using Water Can on it
  • If you have a payment for the farmer to look after your crops, pay it.

Hop between the farming places you’ve chosen and plant seeds there as well.

Step 8. Don’t stay and watch for you crops to grow! Go, get some pineapples and make supercompost instead. It is very important to start using supercompost as soon as possible. You’ll need to put 15 pineapples in a compost bin to start making supercompost. I would recommend using Catherby compost bin.
You can get pineapples using one of these ways:

  • You can buy them from a Charter Trader on the Catherby pierce.
  • You can pick up pineapples on Karamja (just south or the house entrance)
  • You can buy pineapples in the tree shop (north from the bank) in the Gnome Stronghold.

When you get supercompost, use it instead of the normal one. You’ll get better harvests and your crops will rarely get diseased and die.

Step 9. Harvest your crops. Sweet time. Buy a few sacks in the farming shop, make sure you have a Spade in the inventory and dig them out! Fill your sacks with the harvest – you’ll use them later to pay farmers for higher level crops.
Go back to Step 7.

Step 10: Have fun in the process!

P.S. You may have noticed that I did not mention hops, bushes, herbs and trees at all. Don’t blame me – I am mentioning them now

  • Trees. Assuming that you just started Farming, you simply won’t be able to plant trees. But when your level is high enough – go for it! You’ll get TONS of experience from trees. In fact, at high Farming levels you’ll be planting mostly trees.
  • Herbs. Same here. When you are high enough and have herb seeds – plant them. Eventually, you’ll be able to grow high level herbs like ranarr and snapdragon and get a lot of money out of it.
  • Bushes. You can pretty much ignore bushes until you reach high Farming levels. But if you are really into Farming, you may include a few bush patches into your farming routine. Good spots are near south-west Varrok mine and in Rimmington (near the house entrance – you can use house teleport to get there)
  • Hops. Just ignore them.

Good luck!

    Thanks, Roy!
I fixed the spelling error. As for barley, yes, it is used for brewing. I personally use it too. But I think it is outside of the area of this article. I was trying to show people how to start Farming in a less complex way.
