Runescape Fishing - Monk Fishing Vs. Fly Fishing

Though there are many methods to fish in the world of Runescape, most advanced (p2p) fishermen and women usually resort to one of two methods to gain experience: monkfish or fly fishing. This post will discuss the pros and cons of both methods, and will hopefully aid you in making the best choice for your style of playing.

Monk Fishing in Runescape

We’ll start off with monkfish. The biggest draw monkfish have is their nice balance between experience and money. Monkfish require a fishing level of 62 to catch and the completion of the Swan Song quest to obtain access to the fishing grounds. One of the great things about monkfish is that they yield more xp per catch than sharks, yet are easier to catch. Another plus is that they can be sold for as high as 400 gp each, making them both efficient and profitable. Their two largest drawbacks (in comparison to fly fishing) are their speed and location. Monk fish tend to be roughly half as fast as fly flishing, and the Swan Song is quite difficult, requiring moderately high combat levels, which is unfortunate for skillers.

Fly Fishing in Runescape

Fly fishing is a entirely different ball park. Two fish can be accuired using the fly fishing method: trout and salmon. Typically used during both moderate and advanced fishing levels, trout and salmon require fishing levels 20 and 30 respectively. Feathers are also needed to use as bait to catch the fish, and use one feather per catch. As far as strictly experience is concerned, fly fishing is the quickest experience in the game. Their biggest downfall is their profit: trout rarely sell for above 40 gp, and salmon 80 gp. Factor in the cost of feathers, and you’ve got minimal money when all is said and done. However, another plus to fly fishing is the accessibility to the fly fishing spots. The most popular area is Shilo Village, as a bank is a mere click or two away. Unfortunately, this also requires you to complete the Shilo Village quest, which is a difficult (though not impossible) hurdle skillers need to clear. A nice, but longer alternative is the river next to the barbarian village.

To sum things up: if you are looking for riches and a slower ride to 99, monkfish are your best bet. If you want to get levels as fast as possible, and are satisfied with chump change, then go with fly fishing.

Ultimately, it’s whatever you enjoy the most. You may find another method altogether than suits your needs better, but hopefully this guide has at the very least pointed you in the right direction.
