Runescape Holiday Events and Rares

Throughout Runescapes history Jagex have been hosting ‘Holiday drops/events’ on public holidays such as halloween and christmas. On many of these holidays, Jagex dropped special items alooeing the players to collect and trade fun items.

    Christmas 2001:

Who can forget the day Jagex decided to drop christmas crackers throughout Runescape and change the game in a way no one could of imagined. Players picked up crackers and were able to ‘use’ it on another player, one player got a random, almost worthless item, and the other player got a party hat. If you were lucky enough to get a party hat it could of come in si different colours, Purple, Green, Blue, White, Yellow and Red. Nowadays these Party Hats are extremely rare therefore extremely expensive, ranging from 150million to 400million.

In 2001, these items prices were only around 100-500k, but a few weeks later players began to realise that these items were very hard to come by, so as the demand rose, the price rose, and rose and rose until today in the 100s of millions.

    Santa hat:

Then came december 2002, this time the Runescape public expected another item to be given out and the price to sky rocket once again, and they were right. Jagex announced the release of the santa hat, very desired amoungst player thoughout the holiday season. Whent he santa hat was dropped, the item was very popular with new players because of their unique look and somewhat low price, until 2 months later. The price then shot up and now resides around the

These days, most players only dream of owning a rare holiday item.

    Yo-Yo:

In december 2004, jagex stopped dropping items, and started introducing holiday events, where you had to do something for the reward at the end, on top of this, they made the holiday event items non-tradeable. This year they introduced Santa! He was positioned in all major cities of Runescape for about two weeks, if you spoke to santa, you would be rewarded with a yo-yo. Yo-yos could perform a few different tricks like walk-the-dog and loop-the-loop.

    Wolly hats and scarfs:

December 2005, the event ran from 23rd till 3rd of January. This was like an event never seen in Runescape’s history. Diango, the toy seller in Draynor village, was in need of players’ help to make marrionettes, and fill boxes of 1,2,4 or 8. If you managed to fill some boxes then you would be rewarded with different types of hats and scarfs according to how many boxes you filled. if you filled 1 box, you would be given a bobble-hat, if you filled 2 you would be given a jester hat, if you filled 4 you would be given a tri-jester hat and if you filled the full 8 boxes, you would be given a wolly hat.

    Reindeer hat and Wintumber tree:

December 2006, you had the opportuniy to get a reindeer hat and a wintumber tree to plant in your Player-Owned house! This Christmas event ran from 18th December until the end of the year. This year, the set task was to hunt down the fiendish Gublinch who had captured the childerkins for slavery. To save them, you had to team up with Shanty Claws, a furry drunken sailor on the small pier north-east of the Karamja Volcano. Upon arrival, he would brief you on your task. You must kill 10 Gublinch and collect the shards that they drop.

To capture the Gublinch, you needed to collect snowballs. These were found on the south facing side of the Karajama volcano. Players collected around 50 snow balls and climbed down the nearby cave entrance. To capture a gublinch, players wielded their snowballs and clicked on a nearby monster. With a few snowballs, the gublinch froze and broke into shards. Players then had to
collect 10 gublinch shards by pelting them with snowballs, then return to Shanty Claws.

    Snow Globe:

The snow globe was a reward for the Christmas 2007 Event. As a gift from the Snow Queen, RuneScape was covered in Snow during the month of December. Players were able to make snowballs collected from the piles of snow on the ground. These snowballs can be used to Pelt other players, or build Snowmen. Speaking to Snow Imps allows players to obtain various types of Snowman hats, which, when used on a nearly-complete Snowman, will cause them to come to life!

Making a Snowman is a requirement before being able to travel to the Land of Snow, where Players can make more Snowmen. This time, Snow Imps will supply players with three different weapons: Holly Bow, Ice Sword or Winter Staff. Using these weapons on a Snowman turned it into a Snowman Ranger, Warrior and Mage according to what weapon you gave the snowman.

In order to receive a Snow Globe, talk to the Queen of Snow. The Snow Globe, when shaken, allows players to create a pile of snow, anywhere and anytime during the year. These snowballs can be thrown at other players. After building a snowman completely, players also unlocked the Snowman emote.

    Santa Suit:

Jagex released this Christmas event on December 16, 2008. To begin this event, players had to speak to one of three head snow imps, located north of Lumbridge, Rimmington, and Falador. When you spoke to an imp, it would tell you that the Queen of Snow’s son, Prince Jack Frost, had left the Land of Snow and had been turning everything into ice all over Runescape.

When players agreed to help track him down, they would be given an ice amulet. Operating this amulet would result in a snow imp being summoned. When speaking to the imp, you could check whether you were getting ‘hot’ or ‘cold’. Getting colder would be a result of you being closer to Jack Frost. Players would have to travel to various places across RuneScape to find Jack. When found, Jack would freeze you, but it would melt immediately because of your amulet. At this point you would unlock the freeze emote. Your imp would then teleport you to Jack and you would see Santa and his reindeer frozen. Jack then told you that if you could defeat him, he would go home. To defeat him all you had to do what stand south of him and run onto the ice. You would slide into Jack and knock him off the ice.
After defrosting Santa, you could talk to him and would be given a Santa suit.

    Halloween:

Halloween was another of the major holiday times in Runescape, just like christmas, players could pickup items that were dropped or complete events to get a reward.

    Pumpkins:

The pumpkins were the first ever holiday items to ever be dropped. They were dropped in 2001, these items are very rare today because they were the first to be dropped. Just like normal food, the pumpkin can be eaten (not advised to eat it!) and it heals 14hp.

    Halloween masks

These masks were dropped in 2002, just like the party hats they became very high in demand. The masks come in three different colours, Red, Blue and Green with red being the most expensive and green being the least. These masks don’t do anything apart from look good, players will wear them around runescape showing off their wealth and the rarity of the item.

Those are some of the holiday items and rares throught runescape and its history, Just think, one day you could have one of these rare items in your bank!
