Runescape Keeps on Keeping On

I wrote an article recently about Runescape’s Business Strategy or lack there of, and some of the concerns that I had about it. It was bit of a one sided argument and whilst I highlighted some of Runescape’s potential weaknesses in their business strategy as a whole I think that Jagex is obviously doing something right because they always seem to be going from strength to strength.

It was only recently announced that Runescape has officially reached the prolific milestone of over a million paying subscribers, and feat achieved by few other MMORPGs, not to mention in even a more recent MMORPG community announcement which considered Runescape is the third most popular MMORPG with over 5 million active players.

Despite these recent achievements it would seem that that doesn’t stop people always concluding that Runescape is going downhill. Well I thought I’d look into a little bit more and it is quite interesting to see the Google trend for the term “Runescape” whilst in my opinion suggests strong, and continuing, growth. You could probably argue that the growth has slowed, but it doesn’t negate the fact that the game would still appear to growing, which for now 6 year old MMORPG is a remarkable feat.

So how much longer do you think the game will continue to grow for? Or do you think the game’s growth is more dependent on the developments that the Jagex team come up with? How rapid do you think the game’s decline will be when it does start to slip?

“[…] when it does start to slip?”

    I think not. :P

Do I actually need to comment any further?

    Guardian Says:

As a semi-noob (I am confused as to when one stops being a noob - I’m lv 38 right now and some people still call me noob, but ubernoobs keep coming to me for advise and stuff even w/ lv 100’s running around. I don’t get it) I would like to say that there are still a lot of NEW rs players discovering this game, and loving it, even though WE never knew the “old wilderness” like the older players.

So I don’t think it’s fair to say that the less popular updates are going to crash RuneScape anytime soon. RuneScape seems to be getting better with every update and I don’t see a donward trend, despite what some doomsayers keep predicting.
